Wehrlein addresses changing number after Formula E title glory

Pascal Wehrlein is considering switching from using the number 94 to the number one for his Formula E title defence after becoming world champion last weekend in the season finale. 

A victory in the opening race of the London E-Prix and second-place in the final race of the campaign was enough for the Porsche driver to seal his first world title. 

By being world champion, he can now choose to run the number one for the 2024/25 campaign, although he is yet to fully decide.

He has reasons for using the number one and his traditional 94, although even his fiancée has been asking him already what he will choose.

“Yeah, interesting that you’re asking that because I had this discussion with my fiancée also what I should do,” Wehrlein jokingly told RacingNews365. 

“She asked me ‘what will you do next year?’ and I’m still not sure. So I still have to think about it.

“I would like to have the number one on my car for a couple of reasons ,but on the other hand, I also see my 94 number kind of like my personal signature, my personal sign.”

Wehrlein being superstitious

Not everyone chooses to use the number one, although Jake Dennis did opt for the unique number for his title defence last season. 

The number 94 means a lot to Wehrlein, with it being what he has used throughout his career and when he won the DTM crown at just 20 years old. 

He expects to discuss the choice with Porsche team principal Florian Modlinger, as the pair of them are, according to Wehrlein, superstitious over items which deliver luck.

“I’ve won two very important championships with that number, so I’m not sure yet about it,” Wehrlein added.

“I will discuss probably with Florian what he thinks, as we are discussing quite a lot of things together and taking decisions together.

“So I know that he’s a bit like me with believing in things and believing in items which bring you luck or something. So yeah, let’s see in Valencia.”
