Voisin wins, Fornaroli takes championship lead in disrupted race · RaceFans

Callum Voisin secured his first Formula 3 victory by holding off Sebastian Montoya in a disrupted feature race at Spa.

The Rodin driver also claimed his team’s first victory of the season in a race interrupted by multiple Safety Car periods during the race. Gabriele Mini failed to add to his drivers’ championship lead but his Prema team secured their title with a round to spare.

Montoya finished second to claim his first podium of the season, while Leonardo Fornaroli completed the podium in third to assume the lead of the championship heading into the final round.

For the second consecutive day, a damp track awaited drivers as they set off for the formation lap. But with no further rain expected in the day and minimal standing water around the circuit, all drivers opted to take the start on slick tyres.

At the start, Voisin retained his lead from pole while Sebastian Montoya jumped from fourth to seconds as Alex Dunne fell behind Leonardo Fornaroli into fourth. But disaster befell Mini who spun at La Source after contact with championship rival Arvid Lindblad back in the pack, falling all the way down to 29th place.

Voisin and Montoya ran off track at the damp Les Combes in the opening lap but managed to rejoin the circuit retaining their positions. Montoya tried to challenge for the lead along the Kemmel Straight on the second lap, but the Rodin driver held off.

The Safety Car was deployed before the end of the second lap for a two car collision between McLaren junior Martinius Stenshorne, who spun at Stavelot attempting to pass Sophia Floersch, and Ferrari junior Tuukka Taponnen who slid into Stenshorne’s car after appearing to be nudged by Joshua Dufek.

The race resumed at the start of lap seven, but the Safety Car was back out again before the end of the lap after Joseph Loake slid into Floersch while trying to pass up the inside of Bruxelles, putting Floersch out of the race.

Voisin led the pack away once more at the start of lap ten, with Dunne losing several places with a slow exit from La Source. But yet again, the Safety Car was deployed before the end of the lap – this time for two separate incidents. The first involving Lindblad who was spun into the gravel at Bruxelles following contact with Christian Mansell, while Mari Boya suffered a puncture and crashed at the following turn of Speakers’ Corner.

There was enough time for a final restart to produce a two-lap shootout to the chequered flag. Voisin successfully retained his lead from Montoya at the start again, with Fornaroli in third while Noel Leon got around Sami Meguetounif for fourth place.

Despite DRS being enabled on the final lap, Montoya was not close enough to challenge for the lead and instead had to defend from Fornaroli behind. Voisin took the chequered flag to secure victory by just under a second from Montoya, with Fornaroli taking the final podium place in third.

Leon finished half a second outside the top three with Meguetounif fifth and Luke Browning picking up valuable points in sixth. Max Esterson recovered from his crash in the sprint race to claim seventh, with Santiago Ramos, Tim Tramnitz and Dunne taking the minor points positions.

In the championship, Fornaroli moves into the lead by a single point over Mini, with Browning six points behind in third. Lindblad remains fourth despite failing to score for the second consecutive round, with Ferrari junior Dino Beganovic fifth as the series heads to its final round at Monza.
