Vasseur eyeing Singapore glory repeat for Ferrari redemption
Ferrari team principal Frederic Vasseur has outlined his goal of prevailing around the streets of Singapore once again this weekend.
12 months ago, Ferrari won out around the Marina Bay Circuit with Carlos Sainz taking the victory and handing Red Bull its only defeat of the season.
Ferrari enters this year’s event from Singapore looking to repeat its success after narrowly missing out on the win in Baku.
Charles Leclerc attacked Oscar Piastri for almost 30 laps as he looked to regain the lead he lost when the McLaren driver moved ahead after the pit stops.
When asked if Ferrari’s strong pace at Baku was track specific, Vasseur told media including RacingNews365: “If it’s track specific, then it’s good because next weekend it’s the same [type of] corners.
“The race after Singapore, we have a break between Singapore and Austin.
“We’ll have time to discuss about Austin, but first it’s Singapore, and I want to have a good result in Singapore, as we did last year to fight our opposition.”
Ferrari in a ‘good trend’ – Vasseur
Ferrari also just missed out on a double-podium result in Baku with Carlos Sainz crashing out on the penultimate lap following an incident with Sergio Perez.
The convergence at the front of the field has seen Ferrari close to within 31 points of Red Bull, while it sits 51 points down on new leader McLaren.
Vasseur has backed his team to execute its weekend in Singapore in a similar fashion to Baku, but hopes to see it come away with the winners’ trophy.
“We are in a good trend, and we have to continue like this to score more points than today for sure.
“But the pace was there all the weekend, from the first lap of FP1 to the end of the race, this is the most important.
“If we can have perhaps more points next week, but the same pace, it would be a good step forward.”
