Carlos Sainz faces a potential grid penalty for the Japanese Grand Prix following an impeding incident with Lewis Hamilton.

Late in the second session of qualifying at the Suzuka Circuit, seven-time F1 champion Hamilton embarked on a final push lap in a bid to improve his position in his Ferrari.

Although Williams driver Sainz was visible in the distance approaching the sweeping Turn 1 right-hander, Hamilton was clearly blocked by the slow Spaniard with no room for manoeuvre.

Hamilton made a mistake in radioing over his frustration, believing it was Albon who had impeded him. It was Sainz, though.

The stewards have confirmed the incident will be investigated after qualifying.

Given the nature of what unfolded, it will be a surprise if Sainz is not handed a grid penalty for the race. He is due to start 12th.
