Red Bull “scratching the surface” with AI

In the round-up: Red Bull team principal Christian Horner sees huge potential for artificial intelligence to transform their Formula 1 racing operation.

In brief

AI still in its infancy in F1 – Horner

Horner says the development of artificial intelligence offers huge potential for F1 teams to improve many aspects of how they design their cars and race them.

“AI and ML, machine learning, is an aspect of the cutting edge technology of Formula 1,” he told the BBC. “We’re using AI in our simulations, how we prepare for a grand prix.

“It’s a fascinating technology that we’re only scratching the surface of.”

The ability to focus on key areas of car development has become particularly important for F1 teams since the introduction of the budget cap and other restrictions on how much development work they can perform. “The data just enables us to make better-informed decisions,” said Horner.

IndyCar introduces charters for 25 cars

IndyCar has introduced a charter system under which 10 of its teams have secured a total of 25 entries for the series up to and including the 2031 season.

One half of the teams have taken three cars each – Penske, Ganassi, Andretti, McLaren and Rahal Letterman Lanigan – while another five have two cars each: Foyt, Coyne, Carpenter, Juncos Hollinger and Meyer Shank. Incoming team Prema does not have a charter.

Fairclough wins British F4 title

Deagen Fairclough racked up his 11th and 12th victories in the British Formula 4 season at Silverstone last weekend and clinched the title as he did so. Despite the cancellation of the weekend’s second race due to rain (which cost Oliver Bearman’s younger brother Thomas the chance to start from reverse-grid pole position), Fairclough wrapped up the title ahead of the season finale triple-header at Brands Hatch.

“This means so much to my family,” he said. “I’ve been racing since I was five years old, just me, my mum and my dad. We’ve been scraping every penny together to go and have some fun and pursue my career. We’ve come a long way as a family, with a lot of difficulties.”
