- Born on this day in 1981: Zsolt Baumgartner, the only Hungarian driver ever to race in Formula 1
- Born on this day in 1945: Future Le Mans 24 Hours winner and F1 championship runner-up Jacky Ickx
- 60 years ago today the new F1 season opened at South Africa’s East London circuit on New Year’s Day. Jim Clark dominated, winning from pole position, leading every lap and setting fastest lap.
- 65 years ago today the non-championship South African Grand Prix took place at the East London circuit. Paul Frere, who started grands prix in the fifties but never won a championship round, took victory in a Cooper ahead of Stirling Moss.
