Porsche deliver Wehrlein health update after horror crash

Porsche has confirmed that Pascal Wehrlein is OK following his horror crash in the Formula E season-opener.

The reigning world champion went airborne and flipped over on lap 30 of the São Paulo E-Prix, resulting in an immediate flurry of concerning radio messages from fellow drivers.

Wehrlein started the race from pole position and was in contention for a podium, before colliding with Jaguar’s Nick Cassidy at Turn 6.

He was able to escape the wreckage once his car had been flipped back over. Wehrlein was seen walking gingerly next to his destroyed car, before being taken to a local hospital for precautionary checks.

A Porsche statement read: “It is with huge relief that we are able to confirm that Pascal is okay after the on-track incident in race 1 of the new season.

“He’s been taken to hospital for some final checks.”

Wehrlein’s team-mate Antonio Felix da Costa was able to rescue some big points for the Stuttgart-based outfit, courtesy of finishing in second-place.

The German driver’s accident was one of the biggest in the all-electric championship’s history, with the halo device having saved another life.
