Norris suffers shock early exit in Azerbaijan Grand Prix qualifying

Lando Norris’ F1 drivers’ championship hopes suffered a major blow following a disastrous qualifying session for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.

Norris will start 17th at the Baku Street Circuit, the McLaren driver’s first Q1 exit since last year’s inaugural race in Las Vegas.

2024 F1 Azerbaijan Grand Prix – Qualifying results

Charles Leclerc secured a fourth-consecutive pole position in Baku for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, heading off McLaren’s Oscar Piastri and team-mate Carlos Sainz.

Sergio Perez and George Russell were fourth and fifth fastest, respectively. Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton had to settle for sixth and seventh place.

Russell learns fate after F1 stewards hearing

George Russell has avoided a grid penalty for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix after being summoned for an alleged yellow flag infringement in Baku.

Russell was summoned to the stewards almost three hours after the end of qualifying around the Baku City Circuit.

McLaren in talks with FIA over ‘bitter’ Baku yellow flag

McLaren team principal Andrea Stella has confirmed his team is in talks with the FIA over an “extremely costly” yellow flag that was deployed during qualifying in Baku.

Lando Norris failed to improve on his final lap in Q1 and ended the session in 17th place, ensuring he will start the Azerbaijan Grand Prix towards the back of the grid.

Horner reacts after clarification over McLaren and Mercedes front wings

Red Bull team principal Christian Horner has hinted his squad could look to replicate the front wing flexing from rival teams going forward.

Following the Italian Grand Prix, it was noted that Red Bull as well as Ferrari were seeking clarification over the legality of the front wings at McLaren and Mercedes.

Norris responds to ‘stupid’ McLaren team orders suggestion

Lando Norris has branded the idea McLaren would enact team orders during the Azerbaijan Grand Prix “stupid” after his early elimination from qualifying in Baku.

The 24-year-old had to back out of his final push lap in Q1 due to an Estaban Ocon-induced yellow flag in the final sector, leaving him to start the race from P17.
