Norris makes ‘on the table’ F1 championship declaration

Lando Norris has recognised that both the drivers’ and the constructors’ championships are “on the table”, ahead of this weekend’s Azerbaijan Grand Prix. 

The McLaren driver heads to the Baku City Circuit 62 points adrift of Max Verstappen, whilst the Woking-based team are only eight behind Red Bull. 

McLaren has claimed 12 consecutive podiums and has the strongest package on the grid, although a review of its ‘papaya rules’ system was recognised as necessary following the Italian Grand Prix. 

A bold opening lap overtake by Oscar Piastri resulted in Norris dropping from first to third, where he ultimately finished in Monza. 

Regardless of the order, a one-two was on the cards for McLaren in Italy, with Norris finishing at the foot of the podium having reduced the number of points he could have taken from Verstappen. 

Team principal Andrea Stella now recognises Norris could win the drivers’ championship, with the driver also noting that both titles could be claimed by the outfit this season.

The Briton is pleased with how himself and the team ended the European part of the F1 season but has analysed what could have been done better. 

“It was great to finish the final European race on the podium in our 12th consecutive Grand Prix,” said Norris. 

“My engineers and I went over our performance in Monza, and found ways where we can do better, both from my side and as a team.

“Our goal is clear. I have every faith in the team to keep working and improving. Now with both Championships on the table, we’re more determined than ever. 

“I’m proud of the team and can’t wait to see what we can do this weekend.”
