Norris backed to revise contentious Verstappen remark

Former F1 driver Martin Brundle believes Lando Norris will revise a comment he made about Max Verstappen after the Red Bull driver’s remarkable victory at Interlagos. 

Verstappen recovered from 17th on the grid to win the São Paulo Grand Prix, extending his lead in the F1 drivers’ title to 62 points after Norris finished in a disappointing sixth. 

The three-time F1 champion can now secure a fourth consecutive title in Las Vegas, with Norris needing a miracle to get back into serious contention. 

In Brazil, Verstappen was untouchable in the wet conditions, although Norris described the 27-year-old as being “lucky” with the timing of a red flag. 

Verstappen was able to change tyres during a mid-race stoppage, following an accident for Franco Colapinto. Crucially, Norris pitted before the red flag and fell behind Verstappen.

When asked by Sky Sports News if Norris will look back on the comments he made, Brundle said: “I think he will because Max was in a class of one. Those conditions suit his talent level. 

“The McLaren wasn’t the fastest car in the rain, which was a bit surprising because they looked so good in qualifying in wet conditions.

“Max got unlucky with the red flag in qualifying, but he stayed out on track in the race and expected a safety car or a red-flag situation.

“So he knew what to do and then he just steamed off and won by 19 seconds at a canter really, it was a classic drive. Formula 1 did really well to get the race underway and finished, actually.”
