McLaren reveals retro ‘Legend Reborn’ livery for Singapore GP · F1 · RaceFans
McLaren has become the third team to confirm it will run a special livery for this weekend’s Singapore Grand Prix.
The team said its ‘Legend Reborn’ livery apes the look of its cars from 1981 to 1996. The team ran in the colours of its primary sponsor, tobacco brand Marlboro, during that time.
The period covered the first 15 years after Ron Dennis’ takeover of the team and the introduction of the first in its series of MP4-designated cars. These were highly successful, delivering constructors’ championships for the team and drivers’ titles for Niki Lauda, Alain Prost and Ayrton Senna. The names of 13 of the team’s drivers from the era feature in the car’s cockpit.
McLaren’s cars also appeared in the same colours for many years before 1981, including when Emerson Fittipaldi and James Hunt won the world championship for them.
For this weekend the livery has been rendered with McLaren’s heritage papaya colour in place of red. The team ran a similar tribute livery on Felix Rosenqvist’s IndyCar at the Indianapolis 500 last year. The F1 design has been created in association with its sponsor OKX.
The team will hold a formal presentation of its livery in Singapore today with drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, and team principal Zak Brown.
This is McLaren’s third change of livery this year. They previously ran special designs at the Japanese and Monaco grands prix, the latter a tribute to Senna.
Mercedes and RB have also revealed changes to their liveries for this weekend’s Singapore Grand Prix. Red Bull, however, shelved plans to run a design created as part of a competition for fans, after realising it would add too much weight to their RB20.
