McLaren issue statement after FIA rear-wing ruling

McLaren has issued a statement after the FIA made a ruling on its rear wing ahead of the Singapore Grand Prix.

The rear wing of the MCL38 was noted to open slightly at high speed during the weekend in Baku, offering the driver a boost in a straight line.

It led to suggestions that the car was not operating within the confines of the technical regulations.

As a result, rival teams asked the FIA to probe the matter and announced on Friday that the element was not illegal – however, it stipulated that McLaren was required to make changes to the system.

McLaren has now confirmed a successful conversation with the FIA and RacingNews365 understands the team offered to make the changes rather than the governing body requesting a modification.

However, it outlined that it expects the FIA to hold talks with other teams over their rear wings.

“Whilst our Baku rear wing complies with the regulations and pass all FIA deflection tests, McLaren have proactively offered to make some minor adjustments to the wing following our conversations with the FIA,” read a team statement.

“We would also expect the FIA to have similar conversations with other teams in relation to the compliance of their rear wings.”

RacingNews365 can confirm that the rear wing configuration is not on the car this weekend in Singapore and will not be used until Las Vegas, offering it time to make the necessary adjustments.

By proposing to make changes on its own accord, the Woking-based squad did so in order to take the sting out of the building tension from other teams.
