Russell: “Thanks for fixing the car between the sessions, guys. My seat is still exceptionally hot for whatever reason.” He did a flying lap at the end which brought him up to sixth.

Hamilton has also been noted for the same as Verstappen, as he appears to have rejoined the track too early after leaving the track. The chequered flag has fallen and the Mercedes driver is quickest.

Verstappen has been noted for failing to rejoin the track in the correct way at the Roggia chicane. Hamilton just went off there too.

With 10 minutes to go the drivers are settled into their race simulation runs. It looks like Mercedes aren’t going to send Russell for a flying lap so their cars could end up topping and tailing this session.

Second practice has resumed with 18 minutes left and George Russell and Sergio Perez head out first.

Alonso not happy as he crawls back to the pits under the red flag for Magnussen’s crash.
Cronin: “Probably Fernando it’s going to be high fuel now.”
Alonso: “I mean these slow laps, it’s the worst thing that happened to the sport.”

Red flag: Kevin Magnussen has gone into the barrier at the exit of the Roggia chicane. He’s moving inside the car. The Haas pirouetted as soon as he turned into the corner, it spun through 360 degrees and it went in nose-first.

Hamilton: “Seat’s so hot, mate.” Russell: “My seat feels very hot.” Clearly Mercedes have a problem.

Hamilton takes the top time by three-thousandths of a second. Verstappen has to abort a run through Parabolica after a twitch of oversteer: “Fuck’s sake.” Russell has now joined the track.

McLaren have plumped for a set of softs, Piastri looking very quick on this lap so far. He puts up a 1’20.858, losing time in the final sector. Norris then nabs it off him by seven-thousandths of a second, gaining a lot of time on his team mate in the final sector.

Charles Leclerc makes it a crowd-pleasing Ferrari one-two with a 1’21.119, his SF-24 looking impressively stable through the high-speed corners.

Verstappen finally gets a quick lap in, he does a 1’21.610 which leaves him three-tenths of a second off last year’s second practice pace-setter, Sainz.

Over 10 minutes into the session, Russell is yet to emerge and so is Sergio Perez

Hamilton still having problems with his seat getting hot – he asks Mercedes for an ice bag. Norris has displaced him from the top of the times by 0.036s. Piastri pops the other McLaren into third.

Less than five minutes into the session and already Lewis Hamilton has lapped quicker than we saw in the opening session. He’s done a 1’21.641 on mediums. Lando Norris misses the chicane as he leaves the pits.

The second practice session has begun and half the field head out immediately, all on the medium tyre compound.

Lap times fell by almost a whole second in the first practice session on the resurfaced track with its new, wider and flatter kerbs. Last year Carlos Sainz Jnr was quickest in this session with a best time of 1’21.355.

Also in the first practice session Kevin Magnussen was investigated for impeding Carlos Sainz Jnr. The stewards ruled Haas failed to warn their driver the Ferrari was approaching and fined the team €7,500 (£6,300). No action was taken against Magnussen, which will be a relief for him, as he’s already on 10 penalty points.

George Russell will be back in his repaired Mercedes for this session after Andrea Kimi Antonelli shunted it this morning, but Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff indicated it may not be ready for the beginning of the session. Mercedes intend to continue their back-to-back evaluations of their latest floor but have swapped them between their cars so Lewis Hamilton now has the latest, Spa specification hardware, while Russell is using the old one.

Second practice for the 2024 Italian Grand Prix is coming up next.
