Russell doesn’t appear to be in the fight for pole position, he’s 0.436s off Norris with his first effort. Then it’s Leclerc and Gasly, followed by Stroll, Perez, Albon and Alonso who are yet to set times.

Q3 is go and the McLaren drivers are swapping quickest sector times. Norris goes quickest by a tenth – despite a twitch at turn 10 – and Verstappen is two-hundreds off Piastri. Verstappen says he went wide at turn 13 and wants his floor to be checked.

Q2 is over, here are the times:
1. Lando Norris: 1’10.496
2. Oscar Piastri: 1’10.505
3. George Russell: 1’10.552
4. Lance Stroll: 1’10.661
5. Sergio Perez: 1’10.678
6. Charles Leclerc: 1’10.689
7. Alexander Albon: 1’10.768
8. Max Verstappen: 1’10.811
9. Pierre Gasly: 1’10.815
10. Fernando Alonso: 1’10.845
11. Carlos Sainz Jnr: 1’10.914
12. Lewis Hamilton: 1’10.948
13. Yuki Tsunoda: 1’10.955
14. Nico Hulkenberg: 1’11.215
15. Kevin Magnussen: 1’11.295
16. Daniel Ricciardo: No time
17. Esteban Ocon: No time
18. Valtteri Bottas: No time
19. Zhou Guanyu: No time
20. Logan Sargeant: No time

Disaster for Hamilton – he fails to find the time on his final lap and is out! Sainz drops out too in 11th place.

Strong lap from Albon who goes fifth – ahead of Verstappen!

Currently in the drop zone with three minutes to go: Magnussen, Gasly, Tsunoda, Hulkenberg, Albon.

Russell gets into the mix, five-hundredths off Norris. Hamilton is half a second off with that effort, however. Leclerc goes sixth which leaves Perez eighth ahead of Alonso and Sainz.

Norris beats his team mate by just nine-thousandths of a second. Verstappen can’t get close, however – he’s three tenths of a second away. Stroll beats Perez to fourth.

Now the proper laps begin. Oscar Piastri puts up a 1’10.505, well over a second quicker than Hulkenberg who is now second.

Leclerc sets the initial pace with a 1’11.665 but that’s almost three-tenths off his best from Q1.

Q2 has begun and the Ferrari drivers are the first to head out. The stewards are investigating the Perez-Hamilton incident from Q1.

Russell: “How many people were on new then?”
Dudley: “15, 16. So the only ones who weren’t were Verstappen, who didn’t do a lap, Norris who didn’t do a lap and Piastri.”

Q1 is over, here’s a run-down of the times:
1. Sergio Perez: 1’11.006
2. George Russell: 1’11.049
3. Carlos Sainz Jnr: 1’11.327
4. Charles Leclerc: 1’11.370
5. Lewis Hamilton: 1’11.375
6. Lando Norris: 1’11.377
7. Max Verstappen: 1’11.393
8. Fernando Alonso: 1’11.493
9. Alexander Albon: 1’11.503
10. Lance Stroll: 1’11.518
11. Oscar Piastri: 1’11.541
12. Yuki Tsunoda: 1’11.603
13. Kevin Magnussen: 1’11.630
14. Pierre Gasly: 1’11.718
15. Nico Hulkenberg: 1’11.832
16. Daniel Ricciardo: 1’11.943
17. Esteban Ocon: 1’11.995
18. Valtteri Bottas: 1’12.168
19. Zhou Guanyu: 1’13.261
20. Logan Sargeant: No time

Woods: “We’re safely through.”
Perez: “Yeah but we fucking waste a set.”

Sergio Perez slips into the drop zone but jumps up to the top with a 1’11.006 and is safe. Yuki Tsunoda has also got himself safe at the expense of Esteban Ocon.

Carlos Sainz Jnr falls into the drop zone but produces a 1’11.327 to go quickest of all. Sargeant still hasn’t left the pits so he’ll be last.

Verstappen goes back out on the same set of tyres from before. He complains of “unbelievable sliding”. Norris also on used rubber.

Sargeant, yet to do a time, is in the drop zone along with the Sauber and RB drivers with less than four minutes to go.

Russell: “Front sliding massively in the low speed.” He’s tenth at the moment.

With his first lap Verstappen produces a 1’11.393 which is just 18 thousandths of a second off Hamilton – and puts him third. He’s half a second faster than Perez, however. Yesterday Christian Horner conceded this is one of Perez’s weaker tracks. Perez is fuming about traffic: “What the fuck is this idiot doing?” He pits and has to stop on the weigh bridge. Race control are looking into an incident between him and Hamilton at turn nine. The Mercedes driver says: “I was well out of his way.”

Hamilton pips Norris to the top time by just 0.002 seconds. Can Verstappen beat that? He’s not run yet – he came into the session with one fewer set of soft tyres than his rivals. He joins the track now. Sargeant the only driver yet to run.

Stroll lowers the best to a 1’11.832. Albon and Leclerc match that to within a tenth of a second but go no faster. Oscar Piastri beats it with a 1’11.541.

Hulkenberg kicks things off with a 1’13.062. Zhou is six-tenths off. Bottas caught Perez at the end of the lap and may have benefitted from a tow to go quickest with a 1’12.825. However the Alpine pair immediately beat that.

Q1 is go. Nico Hulkenberg, who’s had a rather incident-packed weekend so far, heads out first, followed by Zhou Guanyu, Valtteri Bottas, Esteban Ocon and more.

According to race control, the risk of rain for the session is 40%.

Verstappen’s first two poles at this track came by tiny margins: By 0.038s to Lewis Hamilton in 2021 and 0.021s to Charles Leclerc in 2022. But last year he beat Lando Norris to pole position by over half a second.

Max Verstappen has never started his home race from anywhere other than pole position. But having taken pole for the first seven rounds this year he’s only had one in the last seven events. He would have last time out at Spa, but had a grid penalty for a power unit change.

The other question mark ahead of qualifying is whether Logan Sargeant will be able to take part after his heavy shunt in final practice. A team spokesperson told us the following half an hour ago: “We are assessing the chassis but it currently looks okay. We will aim to repair and build up the chassis to be ready for qualifying, however with the amount of work to be completed it will be difficult, but we’ll give it everything.”

Aside from the dry second practice session it’s been a disrupted build-up to qualifying. The sun is out again but there is a fair amount of rain out at sea heading towards the area. At the moment it look unlikely to interfere with this session but we’ll get a better idea as qualifying nears.

Qualifying for the 2024 Dutch Grand Prix is coming up next.
