Historic F1 track takes further step towards grand prix return

The Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit has started the process of securing Grade 1 accreditation from the FIA to bring the South African Grand Prix back to the F1 calendar.

The track has a long history with the sport and first hosted a world championship event in 1967, with the most recent occurring 31 years ago.

F1 has voiced interest in returning to the African continent – however a lack of up-to-standard circuits has halted any immediate progress.

Seven-time world championship Lewis Hamilton recently asserted the sport “can’t continue to ignore” Africa’s lack of presence on the F1 schedule.

Kyalami has now teamed up with Apex Circuit Design as it looks to implement renovations to the track in order to make it suitable for F1 cars.

South Africa Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Mr Gayton McKenzie recently met with F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali in Azerbaijan, where he also held discussions with FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem.

McKenzie noted the country is “one step closer to bringing F1 to South Africa” after teaming up with Apex.

The company has an extensive motorsport portfolio which includes the Miami International Autodrome, host of the annual F1 Miami Grand Prix.

Outlining its desire to rejoin the F1 calendar in the future, the circuit detailed: “With its rich history of Formula 1 events at the circuit, Kyalami is perfectly suited to host top-tier international motor racing events. 

“Sharing the ethos of creating an engaging spectator and participant experience, Kyalami and Apex are working together to prepare Kyalami for FIA Grade 1 accreditation.

“Whist negotiations with various role players, including Formula 1 owners, Liberty Media, continue tirelessly behind the scenes, South Africans can be rest assured that there will be a suitable home for the return of Formula 1.”
