Further details revealed as F1 edges closer to additional race for 2024

Discussions between Formula 1 teams, FOM and the FIA have been in agreement for some time regarding the possibility of a rookie sprint race after the season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. 

RacingNews365 understands that all parties were in closer agreement across the Azerbaijan weekend, with the rough framework of how the event will be held becoming clearer, with the likes of 2025 rookies Kimi Antonelli and Jack Doohan set for a racing debut behind the wheel of an F1 car.

The sprint race is set to be held on the Tuesday following the Abu Dhabi GP – 10th December, with a start time of around 5pm local – which is the same time as the 2024 finale itself is scheduled to start.

The first half of the day’s running will continue to be the traditional post-season test, in which Carlos Sainz could drive for Williams for the first time, with a qualifying session preceding the rookie sprint race. 

Each team will be limited to one rookie and one car, meaning 10 drivers will be on the grid. 

Questions are still to be answered regarding who bears the additional costs of putting on the race for the teams and who would broadcast the race, although it is expected current rights holders would do so. 

Which rookies are eligible?

It is currently unclear which rookies will be in action.

In order to compete in FP1 sessions as a dedicated rookie, drivers must not have competed in more than two grands prix – which would mean Oliver Bearman would be allowed at the time of writing after his second appearance subbing in for the banned Kevin Magnussen in Azerbaijan.

Franco Colapinto would not be allowed, as is he due to be on nine grand prix starts after Abu Dhabi. 

Liam Lawson would be barred after competing in five 2023 races as replacement for the injured Daniel Ricciardo for RB.
