FIA issue clarification on McLaren rear wing legality

The FIA has issued a statement after concerns were raised over McLaren’s rear wing at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.

Oscar Piastri took victory at the Baku City Circuit as he successfully fended off a lengthy challenge from Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc.

After the race, it was noted that the rear wing on the McLaren seemed to flex slightly at high speed.

The matter was brought to light shortly after the FIA confirmed that McLaren’s front wing was compliant with the regulations when questions were asked by Red Bull and Ferrari.

The FIA highlighted there will be no follow-ups to pursue if all teams continue to pass the strict tests imposed on the bodywork by the sport’s governing body.

“The FIA is closely monitoring the flexibility of bodywork on all cars and reserves the right to request teams to make modifications at any point during the season,” a statement read.

“However, if a team successfully passes all deflection tests and adheres to the regulations and technical directives, they are deemed to be in full compliance, and no further action will be taken.”

But should something be amiss, the FIA has outlined it is possible to implement quick measures to outlaw elements it takes issue with.

“The FIA is currently reviewing data and any additional evidence that has emerged from the Baku GP and is considering any mitigating measures for future implementation,” the statement added.

“This is part of the standard process when scrutineering technical legality, and the FIA retains the authority to introduce regulatory changes during the season if required.”
