Breaking: Ferrari agree power unit supply with 11th F1 team

The Andretti F1 project is set to be powered by Ferrari when it joins the grid in 2026.

The new 11th F1 team, which is being backed by American automotive giant General Motors, will expand the grid to 22 cars for the final time in 10 years.

F1 confirmed last month that the project had received a green light for a 2026 entry.

The scheme was originally spearheaded by former F1 driver Michael Andretti, whose original bid was turned down by F1 despite approval from the FIA.

Andretti stepped away from an ownership position at Andretti Global, with Dan Towriss taking over the reins, soon after which the F1 bid for 2026 was confirmed.

Mario Andretti, the 1978 F1 world champion, who has been named on the board of directors, declared it was in talks with Ferrari over a power unit deal.

The allegiance has since been agreed upon between the two parties with Ferrari announcing “a multi-year agreement starting from 2026 with Andretti Formula Racing LLC, regarding the supply of power unit and gearbox to the racing team led by TWG Global and General Motors, subject to Andretti Formula Racing LLC receiving written confirmation from the FIA – F1 that its entry to the 2026 FIA Formula One Championship has been accepted and approved.”

GM pledged itself to the F1 project when Michael Andretti was still at the forefront as it signalled its intent to join as a power unit supplier.

This remains the case as GM is targeting the 2028 season as the starting point for its power unit. However, prior to the completion of its construction, Ferrari’s engines and gearboxes are set to be utilised.

The new 11th team will be the third on the grid to be powered by Ferrari after its own works squad and Haas.
