F1 drivers to receive vital boost in Azerbaijan Grand Prix

Formula 1 drivers could be aided in overtaking during this weekend’s Azerbaijan Grand Prix by a strong headwind in Baku. 

Current forecasts predict an easterly wind blowing throughout the weekend, which is a direct headwind into the braking zone of Turn 1.

The wind is predicted to be around 12.3-17.7mph, meaning drivers will be able to slipstream cars ahead for longer and brake later into the heavy deceleration zone after the long blast from the exit of Turn 16. 

There is a DRS zone on this part of the track, with another translating into a tailwind into the braking zone of Turn 3 before the twists through the city and castle section.

Wind has often been a problem in Baku, on the shores of the Caspian Sea with the exposed nature of half the track being met with the wind swirling through the high-rise buildings. 

Since Baku joined the F1 calendar in 2016, there has never been a wet session, although rain could be possible on Saturday before qualifying, with it set to get underway at 16:00 local and the race 15:00 local.

Temperatures are expected to be in the high 20s, low 30 degree region.
