F1 dark horse issues Cadillac verdict after FIA snub

US F1 hopeful Colton Herta has addressed the continued links to a Cadillac seat for the 2026 season.

General Motors is on course to enter the F1 grid next year, joining under the Cadillac brand and expanding the grid to 22 cars.

Colton Herta has been linked with a switch to F1 for a while, with Red Bull attempting to get a super licence exception to sign him to its sister squad for the 2023 campaign.

However, the FIA declined to grant the team and Herta a super licence required to race in F1, forcing Red Bull to abandon its plans.

Since Cadillac’s entry plans were announced, Herta has returned to the rumour mill, but the 24-year-old will need to finish at least fourth in the championship to guarantee he obtains the required points to obtain a super licence.

When asked how much effort he will give the potential switch to F1, Herta replied: “I guess the answer to that is I didn’t even know what the math was to get a super license.

“If it happens, it happens, great, and then I’ll have a decision to make – if I’m still wanted.

“If it doesn’t happen, then poor me, I’m stuck racing IndyCars. I’ll be alright either way.”

Herta ‘tired’ of continued F1 rumours

Should he make the move to F1, Herta would become the fourth American driver to race in the series this century.

However, having been linked with a move to F1 for several years, Herta conceded he is “tired” of the speculation that has surrounded his future.

“I don’t really have a concern with it at all,” he said.

“I’ve kind of been dragged around in this talk for, it feels like, half a decade now. I’ve had the carrot in front of me for a while.

“I’m kind of tired of that being the case, and I just want to drive at this point and focus on IndyCar this year and focus on winning a championship, and if something arises out of that, I’d have to think about it.

“It’s still not a ‘for sure’ thing. All my friends and family are here in the US, and I don’t know anybody where I [would be] going, so it’s a big decision to make – if I have to make that decision.”
