De Vries to debut in fastest formula below F1

Nyck de Vries will race in a third different championship this season after it was announced he would compete in the next three Super Formula rounds.

The 29-year-old will take part in the premier Japanese single-seater class for Itochu Enex Team Impul, starting with round five of the season at the Motegi Circuit from 23-25 August.

The team is powered by Toyota, who De Vries races for in the World Endurance Championship (WEC), with the Dutchman taking over the seat Theo Pourchaire began the season in before shifting his focus to IndyCar for the year.

Briton Ben Barnicoat deputised in the car during round two, before Japanese driver Hibiki Taira took the reins for rounds three and four.

De Vries has kept a busy schedule in 2024, which included a return to Formula E with Mahindra Racing, where the 2021 champion finished the campaign in P18.

There was more success, however, in WEC. The former AlphaTauri driver took his first victory since being axed by Red Bull mid-way through his debut F1 season at the 6 Hours of Imola in April.

The 2019 F2 champion will also race in rounds six and seven of the Super Formula season, which take place at Fuji Speedway in October.
