Alonso finally fulfils ‘destiny’ with Newey capture

Fernando Alonso believes “destiny” has finally been fulfilled as he prepares to start work with Adrian Newey at Aston Martin.

Newey will join Aston in early 2025 as its managing technical partner after leaving Red Bull and will, for the first time in Alonso’s long career, work with the two-time champion. 

Newey, who has never worked with either Alonso or Lewis Hamilton, was tipped for a move to Ferrari to team up with the British driver but ultimately opted to move to Silverstone, with Aston Martin investing heavily in new facilities ahead of the rules reset for 2026.

Alonso believes he can still win a third world title, which would shatter the period for the longest spell between titles – currently Niki Lauda’s seven years between 1977 and 1984 – and believes destiny has finally come true.

“Destiny, it seems like destiny always I was missing the opportunity,” Alonso told BBC Sport of his finally getting to work with Newey. 

“But he came now at the end of my career and I will still enjoy as much as I can, try to learn from him.

“We have this mutual respect. We exchanged some messages and spoke from time to time and it seems like we connected always.

“We never worked together but we were always in the same frequency when we talked in the past. 

“I am looking forward, and for Aston Martin, it is a big thing.”
