Wehrlein confirms injuries sustained in horror Formula E crash

Pascal Wehrlein has revealed that he did sustain a “few injuries” after his horror crash last month in Formula E’s season-opener. 

The reigning world champion’s race ended in São Paulo with him upside down, following a collision with last season’s title rival, Nick Cassidy. 

Only small contact occurred between the duo, yet it still launched Wehrlein’s Porsche airborne and onto its side, where it bounced off the wall and completely flipped over. 

He was stranded in his cockpit until the medical team and marshals arrived, with it having taken a few minutes for the former F1 driver to safely exit his Porsche 99X Electric. 

Wehrlein was transported to hospital for precautionary checks, although was quickly discharged and returned to the team’s hotel. 

However, he missed the end-of-year FIA prize-giving gala due to being advised by his doctor not to travel. 

RacingNews365 has been informed that Wehrlein suffered a concussion and bruising to his chest and lungs in the accident.

Ahead of this weekend’s Mexico City E-Prix – the second round of FE’s season – Wehrlein is fit to return at the venue he claimed victory at last year. 

He has also confirmed that injuries were sustained in his heavy shunt which required time to recover from over the festive period. 

“I’m pleased to be able to drive again in Mexico because the accident in São Paulo was a serious one and I came away from it with a few injuries,” confirmed Wehrlein. 

“The festive season has helped me to recover, allowing me to go on the attack again. 

“Apart from the accident, things went well in Brazil and despite not having the best laps in qualifying, I was able to claim pole. 

“That gives us confidence, particularly since we have often been very strong in Mexico in the past. I would like to thank the rescue team in São Paulo – and our own team who are getting my Porsche ready for Mexico.”
