20. Zhou Guanyu: 1’45.947
Race control have noted a potential impeding incident involving Perez and Sainz. “What is he doing?” asked the Red Bull driver.
A brief yellow flag now as the session winds down with Leclerc fastest by a mere six-thousandths of a second. Bottas went off at turn one.
Both Mercedes have now run, Russell is on his eighth lap after making a belated start to the session.
Hamilton moves up to second, six-hundredths of a second off Perez. Drivers are now switching to the medium compound for their race simulation runs.
Colapinto touches the barrier at turn nine but is able to continue this time.
Perez, who’s looking more comfortable in the Red Bull than he has from quite a while, beats Sainz’s time by almost half a second to go top. Verstappen has another off, meanwhile, going off at turn three.
Oscar Piastri has gone up to second, three-hundredths of a second off Sainz.
It seems Gasly had a problem when he held Norris up: “I had a problem. I have a problem with the battery. I’m sorry.”
Verstappen goes second, within a tenth of Sainz. An impressive run by Haas substitute Oliver Bearman puts him fourth.
Tsunoda then gets out of Norris’ way at the exit of turn 13 as the McLaren driver comes by. Pierre Gasly fails to do the same at turn 17, however, and completely ruins Norris’ lap. The McLaren driver raises a middle finger at his rival.
We’ve got a dozen drivers on softs now so we’re about to see some big improvements. Yuki Tsunoda jumps up to third on a 1’44.645.
Colapinto has joined the session in his repaired Williams. That leaves only Russell yet to run, he’s stuck in the pits as Mercedes swap his power unit after identifying a potential problem.
Top times by team so far:
Ferrari: 1’44.323
Red Bull: 1’44.361 (+0.038s)
Williams: 1’45.124 (+0.801s)
McLaren: 1’45.156 (+0.833s)
Aston Martin: 1’45.462 (+1.139s)
RB: 1’45.648 (+1.325s)
Haas: 1’45.802 (+1.479s)
Sauber: 1’45.903 (+1.58s)
Verstappen came to a stop after locking up at turn five, he’s running again. Did well to stop short of the barrier.
Leclerc is not happy: “I’m not driving with this car any more. I’m pitting. It’s impossible that you cannot see that on data. It’s completely… it’s not straight.”
Norris understeers and runs wide in turn 16 which is the last ‘proper’ corner before the flat-out sprint to the pit straight.
Verstappen goes quickest with a 1’45.563 on mediums. Last year’s winner Perez goes almost a second quicker with a 1’44.598.
Perez is frustrated by Stroll: “What is this idiot doing?”
Charles Leclerc in his repaired Ferrari says his steering feels heavy in left-hand corners and light on right. “Is everything okay on data?” he asks. “For now, we don’t see anything strange,” replied Bozzi.
The second practice session has begun and already everyone is out except for George Russell and the Williams and Alpine drivers.
With the start of the session less than five minutes away, Williams say they are “working hard to get the car repaired for FP2.”
Expect to see the lap times improve significantly. Max Verstappen topped the times with a 1’45.546 early on but the track conditions were very dusty. Formula 2 have held their qualifying session since then so the surface should be a bit clearner already.
Esteban Ocon also had to pull out of the earlier session due to a problem with the MGU-H on his Alpine. His team have fitted a replacement engine so he should be back out too. It’s a previously-used unit, so he won’t have a penalty for that.
The first practice session was highly eventful with Charles Leclerc and Franco Colapinto both involved in crashes. Williams say they are confident Colapinto’s car will be repaired in time for him to participate in the second practice session.
Second practice for the 2024 Azerbaijan Grand Prix is coming up next.
