Russell reacts to ‘entertaining’ Verstappen rumours
George Russell has reacted to “entertaining” rumours linking Max Verstappen with a future seat at Mercedes, potentially taking his spot.
The Briton is contracted until the end of next season and therefore requires a new deal to remain with the Silver Arrows for the new power unit regulations.
Mercedes boss Toto Wolff has not hidden his desire to sign Verstappen and work with the Dutchman, although is pleased with its new pairing of Russell and Kimi Antonelli.
However, former Mercedes driver and 2016 F1 world champion Nico Rosberg indicated his concerns for Russell during the recent Italian Grand Prix.
Rosberg raised fears that next year could become a shoot-out between Russell and Antonelli, should Verstappen become available for 2026.
With Antonelli being a rookie and Mercedes’ teenage sensation, the Silver Arrows would likely be reluctant to lose the Italian to a rival team.
The German believes there is pressure on Russell to perform next year, although the 26-year-old is not concerned by the circulating rumours.
“It’s something we have not spoken about at all, to be honest,” Russell told media including RacingNews365.
“I have been with this team for so, so long. I am managed by Mercedes, and we’ve always said that we will be continuing together for the indefinite future.
“There are a lot of conversations going on which are quite entertaining to read, but from my side, I’m not focused on any of that.
“I’m just focused on my driving.”
