After the FIA recently confirmed that Johnny Herbert will no longer serve as a steward in Formula One, the three-time Grand Prix winner has been announced as a global brand ambassador for Lola Cars

The British racing driver, who raced for Benetton, Jaguar, Stewart, Sauber Tyrell, Ligier and Lotus, became a pundit for Sky Sports F1 from 2012 until 2022.

Herbert served as an FIA steward throughout the 2024 season, but a series of interviews with betting companies raised concerns about clashing responsibilities.

The FIA confirmed in a statement that Herbert will no longer work as a steward from the upcoming season onwards: “It is with regret that we announce today that Johnny Herbert will no longer fulfil the position of F1 driver steward for the FIA. Johnny is widely respected and brought invaluable experience and expertise to his role.

“However, after discussion, it was mutually agreed that his duties as an FIA steward and that of a media pundit were incompatible. We thank him for his service and wish him well in his future endeavours.”

However, the 60-year-old has been announced as a global brand ambassador for Lola Cars, just one day after his exit from the FIA was confirmed.

Herbert will ‘bring his interdisciplinary expertise’ to the company as they head into the 2025 Formula E season while also playing a role in ‘partnerships and business development’, working with ‘sponsors and clients’.

Commenting on his new role, Herbert said: “It’s hugely exciting to be involved with an iconic and successful championship-winning marque like Lola,” he said. “Lola has always been a big part of the motorsport world and, having grown up with Lolas around me in Formula Ford, sportscars and F1, joining the team for this next chapter feels like the perfect fit.

“I’m very grateful for the opportunity of being an FIA Driver Steward and I have thoroughly enjoyed the role I have been involved in over the years. It is a difficult job and there are tough decisions that have to be made.

“As Stewards, we have and will continue to treat both drivers and team personnel with the utmost respect and remain impartial at all times during all F1 Grand Prix weekends.”
