Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc has revealed that the Scuderia had been eager to sign Red Bull’s former star designer Adrian Newey, but they ultimately failed to persuade the British engineer to join the Maranello-based outfit.

Adrian Newey announced his departure from Red Bull on the 1st of May. Since then, he has been linked to multiple teams, including Aston Martin, Ferrari, McLaren and Mercedes as well.

Aston Martin finally ended the speculations last week, confirming that star designer Adrian Newey has committed his long-term future to the Silverstone-based Formula One outfit, with the British engineer set to join the team next March.

The British designer will begin working at the team’s Silverstone HQ from 1 March 2025 taking up a new role as Managing Technical Partner.

Speaking to Sky F1, Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc said that he was delighted that Ferrari tried to sign Newey, but he can do nothing else than accepting that the British engineer has elected to continue his career with a rival outfit.

“Let’s say, I am not disappointed. I would be disappointed if we didn’t try, or didn’t speak with Adrian. We spoke with Adrian as a team. At the end, he made his choice and I completely respect his choice of going somewhere else.

“At Ferrari we have always valued the group more than one individual. Of course, Adrian Newey is Adrian Newey and he is incredible for everything he has achieved.

Although Ferrari were unable to persuade Newey to join the Italian team, Leclerc insists that the Scuderia has the right people to find its way to the top of the field.

“But we have incredible individuals in Ferrari. I believe in the group. I am sure we have the right group to come back to the top.

“But, again, I respect Adrian’s decision. He will be working alongside one of his favourite drivers, Fernando Alonso. I wish him the best but I hope Ferrari comes out on top.”
