2024 F1 Mexican Grand Prix – Free Practice 2 results

Carlos Sainz topped the times in a Mexican Grand Prix Free Practice 2 session that doubled as a Pirelli tyre test.

With the exception of the five regular race drivers who missed FP1 to allow rookie drivers to run – Lewis Hamilton, Lando Norris, Fernando Alonso, Charles Leclerc and Zhou Guanyu – Pirelli dictated the runs plans for the session, although these drivers were allowed 30 minutes of ‘normal’ running.

The session was delayed after George Russell crashed heavily at Turn 9 in the opening minutes, leading to a lengthy delay for barrier repairs, whilst he was taken to the medical centre for checks.

He was quickly released, as Max Verstappen’s woes continued with engine problems ruling him out of most of the session as he did not set a time. Alex Albon did not get out onto the track following his FP1 accident with Ollie Bearman, deputising for Leclerc.

Sainz topped the session on a 1:17.689 on the test tyres with Oscar Piastri slotting in behind.
